Since the program first expired Feb. 28, PIA has kept you informed on the latest NFIP information. April 15, Congress approved legislation which reinstates the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through May 31. The reinstatement is retroactive to March 28, when the previous temporary extension was allowed to expire.
The NFIP reauthorization was part of H.R. 4851, which included provisions extending unemployment insurance benefits until June 2 and COBRA through May 31. The bill was originally passed by the House weeks ago, but was returned after an amendment sponsored by Sen. Baucus (D-Montana), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, was added to extend program expiration dates.
Legislation providing long-term reauthorization and reform of the NFIP is supposed to be unveiled by the House Financial Services Committee later today.
